The Only Hope – Psalm 53

What do you do when you feel helpless?

As you look around you, it is easy to begin feeling helpless. God has given this generation more blessings than could have been imagined a hundred years ago. However, the present generation is greatly lacking in their relationship with Him. In spite of God’s blessings upon the world, the spiritual situation of the present world seems hopeless.

“God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God” (v. 2). What must God feel when he examines the people of His creation! As he observes people, His conclusion is harsh. “Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one” (v. 3).

A note of caution—don’t become self-righteous and judgmental of everyone around you. What about your own life? Do you “understand?” Do you “seek God?” Have you “turned aside” from an intimate relationship with Him?

These words are intended to be words of encouragement, and there is encouragement in this psalm. Everything is not hopeless. You may think you are helpless (even in your own life). If this is true, do what David did as he meditated on the conditions around him. He cried out, “Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad” (v. 6).

The more hopeless and/or helpless you feel, the more you should be motivated to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ (the only salvation that is available for the world today). Turn to Him today—understand and seek Him today. The result will be that you will “rejoice and be glad”! Only a fool says, “There is no God” (v. 1).
