Desperation (Part 4 of 4) – Psalm 107:23–32

How do you react to devastating trouble?

Captain Eddie Rickenbacker was a WWI hero—one of the first pilots in the Air Force. During WWII he was on a special mission for the President, and his plane crashed into the ocean. He and some others spent twenty-one days in a lifeboat, drifting and suffering all kinds of troubles. A book was written describing their desperation, We Thought We Heard the Angels Sing.

This psalm could have been written about these men. “They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble” (v. 26).

What causes your soul to melt? It may be because of trouble, or it could be because of the fear that certain trouble might occur. There are many kinds of fears. Some fear heights. Others react to tight, closed-in places like a deep, dark cave.

Devastating trouble can cause people to be “at their wits’ end” (v. 27). However, the promise is “Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses” (v. 28). How about you? Do you call out to Him when you are in trouble?

God has not promised to immediately remove every problem, but He gave one important promise, “He bringeth them unto their desired haven” (v. 31). No matter how desperate your situation may be, cry out to Him, and He will bring a calmness into your heart. When He does this, be sure to take the next step.

“Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (v. 31).
