Peace That Is Genuine – Psalm 55:18

Is your peace evident to others?

An American missionary was sitting in a dentist’s chair in Japan. A dental assistant had all kinds of instruments in his mouth as she worked on his teeth. Suddenly, she said to him, “You have peace, don’t you?”

He was unable to talk with all of the instruments in his mouth, so she carefully removed them. He asked, “What did you say?” She again said, “You have peace in your heart, don’t you?” He answered, “Yes, I do. Even if a war should be happening all around us, I have peace, because I have the Lord Jesus Christ in my heart.”

Their conversation continued for a few minutes, and she then finished the work she was supposed to be doing. He invited her to his house to continue the conversation. She took an extended lunch hour that day, came to his house, and they spent two hours talking.

First, she began to tell him all about her problems. She had problems with her husband. They lived with his parents, and she had problems with her mother-in-law. In fact, she had a long list of problems. Every one of them was enough to prevent her from having peace in her heart. All together they sounded almost unbearable.

Then they talked about the Lord and the peace that He offers to all who trust Him. After having many of her questions answered, she trusted in the Lord as her Savior. She prayed and asked Him to forgive all her sins and to give her peace in her heart. God did exactly what He has said that He will do.

If you genuinely trust the Lord in every area in your life, others will be able to see that your peace is genuine. You should be able to honestly say, “He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with [against] me” (v. 18).
