Doing Good – Psalm 125:4–5

What would you like for God to do for you?
A traveling evangelist was given a credit card and told, “Take and use this for whatever you need.” If this happened to you, how much would you use it? If you use it too much—the owner might cancel it. But, if you do not use it enough, he might think that you do not believe or trust him. What would you do?

Have you begun to comprehend what God wants to do in you and for you? “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him’” (I Corinthians 2:9). A help in learning how much God wants to bless you is to learn more about how much He loves you.

Many people make a “shopping list” of what they want God to do for them. Instead of doing this, it will be much better to pray, “God bless me,” or “Be gracious to me.” Allow Him to decide how He wants to bless you. Whatever He decides to do for you will have much more value than you could ever imagine.

In order to avoid selfishness pray, “Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts” (v. 4). This is not a request for blessings for those who stay busy doing things, but those who are “upright in heart.” Are you upright in your heart? If you genuinely love Him more than you love yourself, you can surely expect Him to “do good” to you.

When you pray the above prayer, you are not insisting that God do things your way, but you are asking for His will to be done in your life, as well as in the lives of others. God is absolutely righteous, and He knows what is best for all people—even the evil ones. “As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity” (v. 5).

Pray that God will especially be good to Israel, “Peace shall be upon Israel!” (v. 5).
