God Is Great! – Psalm 135:5–14
What does God’s greatness mean to you?
The fact is—God is great! This may be good news, or it may be bad news. It all depends upon your perspective. Actually it depends upon your relationship with the Lord.
“For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places” (vv. 5, 6). If you have an intimate relationship with Him, you will enjoy the benefits of His love for you.
God will also bring judgments upon those who reject Him and refuse to trust Him. This happened in Egypt. “[He] smote the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast” (v. 8). The Psalmist also wrote, “[He] smote great nations, and slew mighty kings” (v. 10). Not only did God defeat nations, but He also “gave their land for an heritage, an heritage unto Israel His people” (v. 12).
God can do as He pleases, and it will always be correct, because He is a righteous God. Eventually all people will recognize Him as Lord of all and over all. “For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God” (Romans 14:11). The Psalmist understood this, and he wrote, “Thy name, O LORD, endureth for ever; and thy memorial [fame], O LORD, throughout all generations” (v. 13).
A time will come when the God of the Universe will judge all people that have ever lived. This is going to be an exciting time! If you have trusted in Jesus and He is your Lord, you do not have any reason to dread this time. It will be a time of great joy. You may have some regrets when you realize that you could have been more faithful to Him during your lifetime. However, you will be filled with great joy, “For the LORD will judge His people, and He will repent himself [have compassion] concerning his servants” (v. 14).
