Idols – Psalm 135:15–18
Whom or what are you idolizing? Why?
Before you answer the above question, stop and think about what an idol really is. In some countries you cannot go anywhere without seeing idols such as those described in this passage. “The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands” (v. 15). You may even see some of these where you live. Remember that idols are nothing, except what people make them to be.
Idols do not have any life or power. “They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths” (vv. 16, 17). They are nothing! Therefore, why do people worship them?
There is another type of idol. Many people idolize other people—making them idols. These may include: sports figures, music stars, actors and actresses, politicians, successful businessmen, etc. Anything or any person that others idolize is an idol.
Consider the meaning of “idolize.” The dictionary lists: worship, adore, look up to, admire, venerate, and revere. If anyone allows other people to idolize him, they will very likely become like the idols mentioned above. These people live only for themselves. They are takers—they take and take from those who idolize them, but they do not give to anyone.
However, do not miss the point of these words. They are not intended to condemn those who are idolized, but those who create the idols. “They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them” (v. 18). The important question is, “Whom do you trust?” Idols of any kind will never be able to give you anything you need, but the Lord Jesus Christ will give you everything you need!
