High and Lifted Up – Psalm 135:19–21

What hinders you from blessing the Lord?
Five times in this passage the Psalmist wrote, Bless the LORD! Especially notice that in verse 20 he wrote, “ye that fear the LORD, bless the LORD. If you reverence the Lord, then nothing should hinder you from blessing Him.

There were some things that hindered Isaiah from reverencing the Lord. He wrote, “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train [of His robe] filled the temple” (Isaiah 6:1). He did not specify what the hindrances were. It could have been that King Uzziah was his idol and that he reverenced him instead of the Lord.

Whatever the hindrances were, there was a certain time in Isaiah’s life when they were removed. It happened the same year that the king died. Everyone has to deal with things or people that are hindrances to reverencing the Lord. Have you gone through this experience? Has there been a time in your life when you decided the Lord and His will for you was the most important thing in your life?

Bless the Lord! This means that you are to exalt Him. It also means that you will give Him the best of everything you have. Let it begin with your mouth. Use your mouth to speak and sing words that exalt and praise Him. In fact, you should use everything in your life to bless (exalt) Him. As you do this, He will truly become the Lord of your life. You do not need to do this in order to gain His approval or in order to gain special blessings. Just do it because He deserves it—the best of everything in your life!
