Why? Forever Mercy – Psalm 136:4–9
Why does God allow/cause things to happen?
God is in complete control of the universe, and He never does things or allows them to happen without a purpose. As far as people are concerned, everything that happens seems to relate to God’s purpose of establishing a relationship with people that He has created.
God desires an intimate relationship with people who desire and who choose to have a relationship with Him. In order to accomplish this, God continually reveals many things about Himself, but His basic purpose is to reveal His love for all people.
An important, basic statement is written in verse 4, “To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.” This psalm then lists some of the “great wonders” He has done:
• “By wisdom made the heavens” (v. 5)
• “Stretched out the earth above the waters” (v. 6)
• “Made great lights” (v. 7)
• “The sun to rule by day” (v.
• “The moon and stars to rule by night” (v. 9)
Go ahead—ask God why He did these things. It almost seems like God wants His created beings to ask Him why He performed the unbelievable miracles of the Creation. In case you may be hesitant to ask Him, He has already given the answer. After each of the above statements, the Psalmist wrote “for His mercy endureth for ever.”
All people are different. Some are in awe when they gaze into the sky; others are impressed by sights such as the Grand Canyon; still others are amazed when they look into a microscope and see living organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye. No matter what amazes you most about the universe, remember that God wants you to know that “his mercy endureth for ever.” Whenever you learn something new about the universe, remember that God created that to help you understand “his mercy endureth for ever.”
